Overview

The students will have increased knowledge and understanding of the term ‘Palliative Care’. They will be able to identify its relevance and need within their areas of work, thus producing competent and confident practitioners

Course Objectives

Students will be able to’ discuss the need for palliative care and state members of the multi-disciplinary team involved. Define dignity, comfort and empathy. State terminology used in Palliative Care. Demonstrate effective communication skills required in Palliative Care.

  • Meeting the client and their carer’s Holistic needs..
  • Definitions of dignity, comfort and empathy. Quiz as to what constitutes dignity.
  • Supportive care for client, their family and the caring staff.
  • Hope and quality of life issues.
  • Basic introduction to medication the carers may encounter.
  • Communication skills required. Worksheet comparing poor and effective communication.
  • Dealing with death and its effects on the carers.
  • The grieving process.
