Care Forum Wales COVID-19 & New PPE guidance/updates

As a member of Care Forum Wales, Educ8 has received the below information/updates on COVID-19 for the care sector:

There is new guidance across the UK on use of PPE. This table is a good summary for the provider sector https://bit.ly/3cSczY1 with the full detail here https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/wuhan-novel-coronavirus-infection-prevention-and-control/covid-19-personal-protective-equipment-ppe.

In terms of recent announcements you may be interested in this week’s announcement by Welsh Government on funding https://gov.wales/new-500-million-economic-resilience-fund-launched-wales and we are hopeful that there will be further information specifically relating to social care.

Welsh Government has also confirmed that appropriate testing for the social care workforce will be part of the next tranche of testing and we hear that may start as soon as next week in some areas. If you staffing sustainability is threatened due to people self-isolating you are advised to contact your local authority in the first instance.

CIW has confirmed that the requirement for the first annual returns has been postponed for a year until 2021 and there are other additions to their Frequently Asked Questions including proposed changes to DBS requirements https://careinspectorate.wales/coronavirus-covid-19-frequently-asked-questions-faqs

You may also be interested in the latest UKGovernment guidance on the furloughing scheme for employees. This would seem to indicate that employees who are told to shield for the full 12 weeks are eligible for furloughing https://www.gov.uk/guidance/claim-for-wage-costs-through-the-coronavirus-job-retention-scheme

We were also pleased that the Older People’sCommissioner for Wales took up issued raised with supermarkets around access for care workers to supermarket slots for nhs workers and restrictions on care homes purchasing https://twitter.com/talkolderpeople/status/1243583162359468040?s=20

We understand some care staff have expressed concerns about the police stopping people car sharing. We have been advised that this should not be an issue if they have a letter from their employee – but any actual cases do let us know.

Also a reminder of the Social Care Wales Q&A including issues extra time in the registration process https://socialcare.wales/about/coronavirus-and-our-work-what-you-need-to-know
