Equine Qualifications

We offer a range of qualifications in horse care, racehorse care and BHS stages through our partner Haddon Training. Horse care and racehorse care are available at level 2 and level 3 and BHS stages can be studied at levels 2, 3 or 4. We also offer the Level 3 Award in the Principles of Transporting Horses.

Overview

Our courses are designed for those entering the industry, through to those with experience of working with horses in an equine business. The range of units covered in the courses will teach learners invaluable skills and knowledge to help care for horses as well as the skills to manage a team.

Horse Care


Our apprenticeship can be tailored around the following sectors:

Riding
The riding pathway is for those who are interested in riding as part of their apprenticeship. It incorporates riding over poles, riding on varied terrain and how to follow the highway code.

Non-riding
The non-riding pathway is for those who want to gain horse care knowledge and assist with the organisation of the yard. It covers yard organisation, customer engagement and recognising their needs, as well as using IT skills to support the business

Breeding 
This pathway suits those working in  horse studs or equine breeding centres.It covers knowledge and understanding of equine reproduction, how to care for broodmares and foals, how to work safely in the environment and preparing equines for sales and shows.

Coaching 
This route is for those with an interest in coaching riders at grassroots level.
Within this pathway, they will learn how to plan, deliver and evaluate lessons for a range of riders.

Racehorse Care

Our apprenticeship in racing is about building a future, creating a path, and fulfilling dreams. 

This is an industry like no other; it offers those that work hard the chance of truly unique and brilliant opportunities; all of which are led by a passion for horses, racing and the community around it.

The Level 2 apprenticeship is designed to provide the skills and knowledge required to gain employment working with racehorses in the racing industry. 

All current racing grooms under the age of 19, must complete the Level 2 racehorse care apprenticeship or equivalent qualification.

The Level 3 apprenticeship is designed to develop the skills and knowledge already gained and will support the apprentice progressing into a higher role.

To apply for a trainers licence, completing the Level 3 racehorse care and management apprenticeship or equivalent, is an essential part of the criteria.

BHS Stages

This qualification is ideal for those who:

• Enjoy caring for and managing the welfare of horses.
• Aspire to manage an established equestrian business.
• Aim to advance their career in grooming, stable and business management.

Training for BHS assessments should include a mix of practical training and practice, workshops, events and revision or study at home with a BHS Approved Centre. 

The assessment day focuses primarily on observation of the learner completing practical tasks, discussion of the tasks performed and discussion of related topics. Visit www.pathways.bhs.org.uk

BHS Stages 2: Foundation Groom

BHS Stage 2 provides an in-depth foundation knowledge and understanding of equine care and management, and the initial principles of teaching. This career certificate demonstrates the foundation skills to work in the industry as a groom with limited supervision. 

BHS Stage 1 exam or recognised prior learning as specified by the British Horse Society must be completed prior. We deliver the care and lunge units.

Level: BHS Stage 2: Foundation groom

BHS Stage 3: Professional Groom

BHS Stage 3 demonstrates an ability to work in the industry, taking higher responsibility for the day-to-day running of the yard and support and management of competition horses. This career certificate demonstrates the practical skills and knowledge to support the management of the yard.

BHS Stage 2 exam or recognised prior learning as specified by the British Horse Society must be completed prior. We deliver the care and lunge units.

Level: BHS Stage 3: Professional groom
Duration: 15 - 18 months

BHS Stage 4: Yard Manager

BHS Stage 4 celebrates the development of knowledge in horse care and management, covering business and breeding units. This career certificate demonstrates the experience and skills required to independently train individuals and groups of riders, with sound practical business knowledge and the ability to take responsibility for an equestrian establishment or work as an effective freelance coach.

BHS Stage 3 exam or recognised prior learning as specified by the British Horse Society must be completed prior. We deliver the care and lunge units.

Level: BHS Stage 4: Yard Manager
Duration: 18 - 24 months

Transporting Horses

We are proud to be a leading supplier and recognised centre for delivery of the 1st4sport Level 3 Awards in the Principles of Transporting Horses. 

These accredited qualifications ensure the welfare of horses during transport on either short journeys (65km+ and less than 8 hours) or long journeys (over 8 hours) in the UK.

Animal welfare legislation requires anybody who transports horses for the purpose of economic activity, which is for any business purpose, regardless of whether the business makes a profit,  to hold a Certificate of Competence for the handling and transporting of horses. 

Both drivers and handlers, known as attendants, are required to ensure they understand all the elements of animal welfare whilst transporting horses.
