Are you working in, or aspiring to work in, the health and social care sector in Wales? This qualification provides the essential knowledge and skills to support your journey towards professional registration with Social Care Wales as a social care worker and prepare you for progression onto the Practice qualification as part of a full apprenticeship.

What you will gain:
- The core principles and values which underpin health and social care practice
- Ways of working in the health and social care sectors
- Effective practice within health and social care
How it works
Once you have registered, you will be contacted by our facilitator who will provide you with a log in for our Moodle site. The course is designed as self-study, at your pace. Within 12 months, you will work through a variety of topics that will interactively build and assess your knowledge. It may be that you have experience of working in the care sector, are brand new to the industry, or even thinking about it as a career choice. Through a carefully curated skill-scan, you will identify what knowledge you already hold, that which you may need a brush-up and where the gaps are.
How you’ll learn:
- Access unit-specific resources on Moodle, including detailed learning materials and interactive tools
- Work through the content at your own pace, undertaking further reading and learning through the links available, if you so wish
- Test your knowledge through end-of-unit quizzes and activities.
- Dedicate approximately 2-4 hours per week to your study to move through the content, more if you wish.
Your assessment and next steps:
When you feel ready, you’ll complete a formal assessment under test conditions at one of our approved centres. On successful completion, you’ll receive a City & Guilds recognised qualification.
This certificate demonstrates your core knowledge to employers and, if you’re already working in care, enables you to register with Social Care Wales. We recommend speaking to your employer about the registration process.
Progress your career:
Once you’ve completed the Core qualification, you’re eligible to progress onto the full Health and Social Care Apprenticeship. Fully funded by the Welsh Government (subject to eligibility), the apprenticeship combines the Core and Practice qualifications to support your continued growth in the sector.
