With over three decades of experience in the transport industry, Simon has seen almost every side of the profession, from bus driver to trainer, examiner, and transport manager. But after suffering two major strokes in 2021, he was forced to rethink everything. Now, with the help of an ILM Level 5 apprenticeship with Educ8 Training, he’s rebuilt not only his career but also his confidence, health, and outlook on life.
A lifelong commitment to the industry
Starting his career as a driver in 1987, he quickly progressed through the ranks. By 2000, he had become a trainer responsible for driving standards and, in 2018, a DVSA-approved delegated driving examiner, and celebrated 25 years as a trainer this year! His commitment to learning and professional development is clear, from completing his NVQ Level 2, to earning a Bachelor of Education (Hons) from Cardiff University.
Throughout his career, he’s also gained qualifications in transport management, health and safety, first aid, and quality standards auditing, always seeking to improve his knowledge and leadership skills.
A life-changing challenge
In 2021, everything changed. He suffered two serious strokes, losing 25% of his brain function. The road to recovery was long and difficult, marked by a significant loss of confidence and a need to rebuild both physically and mentally.
“After I regained my driving licenses, the first thing I did was reapply to DVSA to become a delegated examiner again,” he recalls. “Then I resat my Transport Manager qualification with CILT UK. That gave me the drive to take on the next challenge, studying for my ILM Level 5 with Cardiff Bus and Educ8 Training.”
Rebuilding through learning
The ILM apprenticeship has offered more than just professional development, it’s been a crucial part of his recovery journey. Regular meetings with his trainer coach, Andy, and additional support from Suzanne have made learning flexible and manageable alongside his other commitments.
“Educ8 have been brilliant, everything is online, and the extra support has really helped. I’m studying around work and home life, and it’s all fitted in well.”
The qualification has also reignited his confidence and motivation. “It’s been a great workout for my remaining brain,” he says. “I’ve been working on both my physical and mental health, walking and swimming daily. I’ve lost almost four stone, and that’s done wonders for my self-image and mental wellbeing.”
A proud milestone – just in time for adult learners week
This September, as part of Adult Learning Week, he will celebrate a significant milestone: graduating for the second time, this time in front of his wife and youngest son.
“After such a life experience, to be able to stand there, showing off my new self-confident, trimmer look, it’s something I’m truly proud of.”
Adult Learners Week is all about celebrating the power of education at any stage of life, and his story is a perfect example of how lifelong learning can help people overcome challenges, rediscover their strengths, and transform their futures.
Why choose an apprenticeship with Educ8 Training?
When asked what advice he would give others considering an apprenticeship, his response is clear:
“It’s a good way of challenging yourself at your own pace, while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. For me, it’s been a lifeline, a way to get back not just my career, but my sense of self.”
