Communication in frontline roles: Sian Hall’s Advice and Guidance Apprenticeship Journey

For professionals working face-to-face with people every day, confidence, communication, and the ability to offer the right support are essential skills. For Sian Hall, completing the Level 3 Advice and Guidance Apprenticeship with Educ8 Training was a turning point in recognising those skills and unlocking new career opportunities within the NHS.

Supporting people at the heart of healthcare

Sian currently works as a Generic Therapy Assistant Practitioner within the Falls Prevention Service at Cwm Taf Health Board. Her role is centred around helping individuals who have experienced falls, feel unsteady, or are worried about falling regain confidence and independence.

From delivering community education sessions to supporting care home staff and running strength and balance classes across multiple locations, Sian’s work is highly people-focused and community-driven.

Every day involves meaningful, face-to-face interaction, offering reassurance, guidance, and practical support to those who need it most.

Discovering the value of the right qualification

Before enrolling with Educ8 Training, Sian had already built over a decade of experience within the health board. When she was introduced to the Advice and Guidance apprenticeship, a qualification that truly aligned with her day-to-day responsibilities, Sian realised that the right qualification could have a transformative impact on her career.

One of the most powerful aspects of the apprenticeship was how it helped Sian recognise the professional value behind the work she was already doing. Through observations and tailored support from her trainer coach, Sian began to see her role in a completely new light.

“You think you’re just having a nice time and being pleasant to people, but really what you’re doing is providing feedback… reassurance.”

For those in customer-facing or patient-facing roles, this is where the Advice and Guidance qualification stands out. It helps individuals understand the impact of their communication, build confidence, and articulate their skills in a meaningful way.

 Career progression and new opportunities

Completing the apprenticeship didn’t just change Sian’s mindset, it directly impacted her career progression.

With a new understanding of her transferable skills, Sian felt empowered to apply for a higher-level role within a completely different department.

“If I hadn’t done that qualification, I don’t think I would have seen how my skills were transferable and what I could bring to that role.”

She successfully progressed from a Band 3 to a Band 4 position, moving from community mental health into a physiotherapy-based team, something she previously wouldn’t have considered possible.

Flexible learning that works around real life

Sian’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. While completing her qualification, she experienced ongoing health issues and required surgery. Despite this, the flexibility of the apprenticeship and the support from her trainer coach ensured she could continue her learning without added pressure.

This flexibility is a key benefit of Educ8 Training apprenticeships, particularly for those balancing demanding roles, health challenges, or personal commitments.

Sian is now a strong advocate for apprenticeships and regularly encourages others to take the same step.

“I’m forever telling my peers… it just helps you to recognise and get out of that mindset of ‘I’m just a support worker’… I’d recommend it to everyone.”

Why advice and guidance apprenticeships matter

Sian’s story highlights just how valuable the Level 3 Advice and Guidance Apprenticeship can be, particularly for those working in roles that involve direct interaction with people.

Whether in healthcare, customer service, education, or community support, the qualification helps individuals:

  • Build confidence in communication
  • Recognise and articulate their skills
  • Provide structured, effective support
  • Progress into new roles and opportunities
