What is Welsh government apprenticeship funding?

Welsh government apprenticeship funding enables eligible learners to complete nationally recognised qualifications while working, without paying training costs. Unlike traditional classroom-based learning, apprenticeships are completed in the workplace, allowing learners to apply their knowledge immediately while developing practical skills that benefit both themselves and their employer.

As a Welsh government contracted provider, Educ8 Group works closely with employers and learners across Wales to deliver high-quality apprenticeship programmes that respond to industry needs and support long-term workforce development.

For eligible programmes, apprenticeship training is fully funded by the Welsh Government, meaning there is no cost for the apprenticeship training to either the learner or employer, however funding is subject to Welsh Government eligibility criteria and programme availability.

Why choose an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship allows you to:

  • Earn while you learn.
  • Gain a nationally recognised qualification.
  • Develop practical workplace skills.
  • Progress within your current role or begin a new career.
  • Study flexibly around your work commitments.
  • Increase your confidence and long-term career prospects.

Whether you’re starting your career, changing direction or looking to develop within your existing role, an apprenticeship provides valuable experience alongside professional qualifications that employers recognise.

In addition to this, apprenticeships help organisations to:

  • Upskill existing employees.
  • Develop future managers and leaders.
  • Address skills shortages.
  • Improve employee retention and engagement.
  • Increase productivity through workforce development.
  • Invest in staff development without apprenticeship training costs for eligible programmes.

Many employers use apprenticeships not only to recruit new talent, but also to support the professional development of their existing workforce, helping retain valuable employees while strengthening organisational capability.

Who can apply?

Welsh government funded apprenticeships are available to many individuals across Wales.

You may be eligible if you:

  • Are aged 16 or over.
  • Are employed in an appropriate job role.
  • Work a minimum of 16 hours per week.
  • Live in South Wales, or spend the majority of your working time in Wales.

Eligibility criteria and funding availability can change, so our team will always confirm the latest requirements before enrolment

What does the funding cover?

For eligible apprenticeship programmes, Welsh government funding covers the cost of delivering your apprenticeship qualification, including:

  • Apprenticeship training and assessment.
  • Qualification registration and certification.
  • Ongoing support from an experienced trainer coach.
  • Progress reviews throughout your apprenticeship.
  • Flexible learning designed to fit around your work.

This allows learners to focus on developing their skills while employers benefit from a structured, supported approach to workforce development.
