Advancing Careers in the Childcare Sector Through Apprenticeships

Educ8 Training Group have been working alongside Flying Start Family Centre in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan since 2016. Jade Evans, our Senior Account Manager recently met with Flying Start Childcare Manager, Emma Selby. Emma tells us how apprenticeships offer a great avenue for progression within the childcare sector.

Working within the Flying Start Family Centre and managing four Flying Start settings across Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan Emma also supports Flying Start Childminders and is responsible for approximately thirty-two childcare staff within the county.

Producing skilled and self-sufficient staff

Flying Start is a Welsh Government funded programme and is available in targeted areas, supporting all families to give 0-3-year olds a ‘Flying Start’ in life. The programme aims to provide intensive support services for children and their families.

The focus of the programme is on promoting language, cognitive, social and emotional skills, physical development and the early identification of high needs.  This is achieved through the delivery of health support and guidance, parenting groups and free part-time childcare.  Having completed apprenticeship qualifications, staff are well-equipped to confidently navigate this comprehensive program. Apprenticeships produce a skilled and assured workforce.

Apprenticeships offer a pathway for career advancement

During the last 8 years where Flying Start Family Centre have worked alongside Educ8 Training, a total of 19 apprentices have completed various qualifications. Staff have studied a range of programmes with Educ8 including Childcare Level 2-5, ILM Leadership and Management as well as our Advice and Guidance qualification.

Apprenticeships at the centre have encouraged staff development, providing a valuable avenue for progression. Emma highlighted that apprenticeships enable employees to acquire relevant qualifications, whilst boosting confidence and capability. These programs contribute to skills development, allowing staff to excel in their roles.

Collaboration between employer and training provider

Apprenticeships offer practical individuals a great opportunity to succeed in employment, providing an excellent entry into the workforce. They also enable collaboration between employers and training providers to shape individuals to fit the business needs.
