Evan is currently employed with Merthyr Town Football Club as a Social Media Executive, where he oversees maintaining and supervising all the club’s social media accounts. He has been a follower of the club for many years, and now his Social Media for Business Level 3 apprenticeship with Educ8 Training enables him to support his local team while developing professionally through a social media apprenticeship in Wales.
Through this fully funded social media apprenticeship, Evan has been able to combine hands-on experience with structured learning, building valuable digital marketing skills that directly support the club and its community.
Evan’s day-to-day responsibilities are varied and include managing content across multiple platforms alongside promoting club activity, updates and community initiatives. He also covers player-related news, including arrivals and departures, and supports the delivery and promotion of club events and campaigns.
During the off-season, Evan’s role expands beyond football coverage. He plays an active part in organising and promoting community events, charity initiatives, and wellbeing activities, helping maintain strong engagement with supporters and the wider local area.
A Meaningful Role
Evan has been a supporter of the club for many years, and now, through his social media for business apprenticeship, he can earn and learn while contributing to something he truly cares about. This transition from supporter to employee has made the experience especially rewarding.
“It was a bit of a jump going from being a supporter on the terraces to having that active role within the club.” Evan explains.
He also highlights how being involved in promoting community initiatives has added even more value to his role:
“Having some form of involvement in organising and promoting these events has been very special.”
A Non-Traditional Route into Digital Careers
Evan has always recognised the value of practical experience. After deciding not to go to university, he took the initiative to start his own blog, which quickly gained attention from a media company. This led to his first role as a Digital Content Producer, providing him with invaluable hands-on experience in social media and content creation.
This opportunity opened doors to working with major organisations, including BBC Wales, Sky Sports and Le Monde. Despite building an impressive portfolio, Evan found that the lack of formal qualifications created challenges in progressing further in the industry.
“I had a brilliant portfolio but no qualification to back that as such.”
Why a Social Media Apprenticeship Was the Right Choice
After facing barriers to re-entering the industry, Evan chose to pursue a fully funded social media apprenticeship with Educ8 Training to strengthen his career prospects.
Having previously completed a Level 2 apprenticeship, he already understood the benefits of this pathway and felt confident returning to it.
“It’s been an opportunity I’ve grasped with both hands.”
The apprenticeship allows him to gain a recognised qualification while continuing to build real-world experience in a role he is passionate about.
Learning While Earning
One of the biggest advantages of Evan’s social media apprenticeship is the ability to apply learning directly to his job.
“It’s been a lovely balance of the day-to-day role alongside the framework.”
He particularly values developing new and existing skills and seeing the results of his work in real time. This has led to him building a strong foundation for future career opportunities.
Building Confidence and Future Opportunities
Since starting his apprenticeship, Evan has seen significant personal and professional growth. The combination of responsibility, visibility, and support has helped build his confidence and expand his career ambitions.
He is now developing valuable industry connections and gaining experience that will support future opportunities both within sport and across the wider digital sector.

“If I had somebody to point me in this direction… I would have explored it a long time ago.”
