Dafydd Humphreys, a Digital Learning Specialist for Aspire 2Be, part of the Educ8 Group, is a strong advocate for continuous professional development through apprenticeships and leadership and management training. Having completed his ILM Level 4 qualification, Dafydd is now progressing onto Level 5, demonstrating how apprenticeships can support long-term career growth.
Building Skills Through Leadership and Management
Dafydd previously worked as a manager within the apprenticeships team before transitioning into his current role as a Digital Learning Specialist. His position now combines course planning, content development, and the delivery of engaging learning sessions. He supports learners undertaking micro-credentials; short, focused programmes designed to develop digital and leadership skills, as well as delivering training to businesses looking to upskill their workforce.
To strengthen his professional capabilities, Dafydd enrolled in a Level 4 programme focused on leadership and management. This qualification helped him develop key management skills, deepen his understanding of leadership theory, and build confidence in his role. Following this success, he naturally progressed to a Level 5 qualification, continuing his journey through leadership apprenticeships.
Reflecting on his experience, Dafydd noted that while the Level 5 programme built on familiar learning methods, it offered more advanced challenges. With the consistent support of his trainer coach, Caroline Gulsen, he was able to successfully adapt to the increased demands.
“Even though we had a meeting once a month, Caroline was always available. I could send her a message on a Monday morning, and she would get back to me within a couple of hours,” Dafydd explained.
Practical Benefits of Management Courses
One of the key advantages of Dafydd’s apprenticeship experience is how closely it aligns with his day-to-day responsibilities. The skills he has developed through leadership and management courses are directly applicable in his role.
He has strengthened his ability to prioritise tasks, manage multiple projects, and allocate resources effectively, ensuring all projects are delivered on time. Additionally, Dafydd has developed analytical skills, enabling him to interpret learner data and maintain high course completion rates.
“What’s great is the apprenticeship is job-specific, so I was completing parts of the apprenticeship as I was doing my job,” he said.
