Reaching new heights in leadership: Jennifer Walters’ Level 5 apprenticeship journey

For professionals already in leadership roles, development doesn’t stop once you reach management level; in fact, that’s often where the real learning begins.

For Jennifer Walters, a Ward Manager within Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, the Level 5 Leadership and Management Apprenticeship with Educ8 Training has been a powerful step in strengthening her leadership skills, building confidence, and gaining a deeper understanding of the bigger picture within healthcare.

Leading in a fast-paced healthcare environment

Jennifer plays a vital role as Ward Manager on a busy children’s ward, overseeing both staff and patient care in a demanding and ever-changing environment.

With a career spanning multiple areas including emergency care, paediatrics, and assessment units, Jennifer brings a wealth of experience to her role. However, stepping into leadership without formal training left her feeling there were gaps she wanted to address.

“I knew that I had gaps in my knowledge and skills that I would like to have improved on,” Jennifer states.

Her role requires balancing staff wellbeing, operational management, patient care, and compliance, all while supporting senior leadership with data and decision-making.

Stepping into higher-level learning

At the beginning of her learning journey, Jennifer chose to go straight into a Level 5 Leadership and Management apprenticeship, demonstrating her ambition to grow and develop at a higher level.

After discovering the course through internal Health Board resources, she recognised it as the perfect opportunity to formalise her leadership skills and enhance her performance as a manager.

The onboarding process with Educ8 Training ensured the qualification was the right fit for her role, giving her confidence from the very beginning.

“They were fantastic… they literally went through everything… and made sure that my job role matched the level.”

Learning that transforms leadership

One of the most valuable aspects of Jennifer’s apprenticeship has been the ability to immediately apply learning to her day-to-day role.

From understanding personality types to implementing quality improvement strategies, every module has had a direct impact on how she leads her team. Through the apprenticeship, she has developed a stronger understanding of how her role fits with wider organisational goals.

This insight has improved her decision-making, allowing her to lead with greater clarity and confidence.

“It makes me perform better as a manager and make clearer decisions.”

Support that makes learning possible

Returning to study at a higher level can feel daunting, especially after time away from formal education. For Jennifer, who hadn’t written academically in years, the prospect was a significant concern.

However, the support from her trainer coach, Suzanne Evans, made all the difference. Structured guidance, regular check-ins, and personalised support helped Jennifer build confidence and stay on track throughout her learning journey.

Balancing leadership, learning and life

Balancing a demanding healthcare role with study is no small task, but the flexibility of the apprenticeship has made it achievable.

With dedicated study time and understanding from both her employer and Educ8 Training, Jennifer has been able to progress without feeling overwhelmed.

“That’s the main thing; I’ve been given the time, and that makes a huge difference,” Jennifer says.

This flexibility is a key advantage of apprenticeships, particularly at higher levels, where learners are often managing significant professional responsibilities.

Why higher-level apprenticeships matter

Jennifer’s journey highlights the value of Level 5 Leadership and Management apprenticeships for experienced professionals.

These programmes are designed to:

  • Strengthen leadership and management capabilities
  • Build confidence in decision-making

Jennifer’s story is a powerful reminder that even experienced leaders can benefit from structured learning and development.

By investing in her skills, she is not only improving her performance but also enhancing the support and care provided to her team and patients.

Her journey reflects a key message at the heart of apprenticeships:
there is always more to learn, and every step forward opens new opportunities.
