World Environment Day: Turning energy and sustainability ambition into practical action

World Environment Day is an important reminder that sustainability is no longer simply a future aspiration for businesses, and is now a part of how organisations operate, grow, and create long-term impact today.

Across industries, employers are increasingly looking at how they can reduce environmental impact, improve operational efficiency, and contribute towards wider net zero ambitions. But while sustainability goals are becoming more common, turning ambition into meaningful everyday action, remains a common challenge.

At Educ8 Training, we believe lasting environmental change starts with people.

As a business, we are continually reviewing how we can align our own practices with the values behind World Environment Day, from reducing unnecessary business travel and lowering energy usage to strengthening community engagement and encouraging more sustainable ways of working across the organisation.

One person helping to drive that work internally is Emily, Health and Safety/Human Resource Lead at Educ8 Training, whose apprenticeship journey demonstrates how investing in people can create real environmental impact.

Emily has worked at Educ8 Training for nine years, originally joining on a short-term contract supporting employability projects while studying at university. Since then, she has progressed through several roles within the organisation while also committing to continuous professional development, completing seven qualifications with Educ8 Training along the way.

Most recently, Emily undertook the Energy and Carbon Management apprenticeship to deepen her understanding of sustainability and support Educ8 Training’s Net Zero by 2050 ambitions.

Today, she works across departments to help deliver the company’s Green Action Plan, supporting initiatives focused on reducing energy consumption, lowering business miles, and strengthening Educ8 Training’s Green Dragon environmental certification.

Through the apprenticeship, Emily developed the knowledge and confidence to evaluate the organisation’s carbon footprint and support strategic environmental decision-making at leadership level.

Reflecting on the experience, Emily said:

‘I would 100% recommend an apprenticeship with Educ8 Training. I have learned more at work every day through my qualification than I did during my degree. The practical application of learning made a real difference to my role and to the company.’

Emily credits much of her development to the practical nature of the apprenticeship and the support she received throughout the programme.

Working closely with Trainer Coach, Suzanne Evans, Emily was able to apply theory directly to real business challenges through collaborative planning, problem-solving, and environmental strategy discussions. That practical application is exactly why the Energy and Carbon Management apprenticeship is becoming increasingly important for employers.

Sustainability is no longer the responsibility of one department or one individual. Businesses increasingly need employees across operations, leadership, administration, and facilities teams who understand energy efficiency, carbon reduction, and sustainable business practices.

For many organisations, developing those capabilities internally can lead to tangible benefits, from reduced operational costs and improved environmental performance to stronger supply chain credibility and future workforce resilience.

World Environment Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the collective responsibility businesses have in shaping a more sustainable future. But it also highlights the importance of equipping people with the skills needed to make that future achievable.

At Educ8 Training, we believe meaningful sustainability progress happens when organisations invest not only in environmental goals, but in the people who will help deliver them.
